Lizsandra

Preston, Holguin Province Cuba

Who are you and what do you do?
'My name is Lizsandra Sanchez'

Why do you choose to live in Preston?
'This place is peaceful, familiar, and its climate is very cool because we constantly feel the saltpeter breezes.'

What's your favourite place in Preston and why?
'My favourite place is the beach known as El Perico. My children and I also enjoy Del Mar. It is a small place and despite being abandoned it has a beautiful view on both sides of the old sea and sea dock. From there you can see the chimneys of the old sugar mill, the chimney of a thermoelectric plant and on the horizon the great tourist work of Ramon from Antilla.'

What is Preston proud of?
'I am proud that my town is geographically located in the largest stock market bay in the world. Nipe Bay is an area where the main economic activity was the sugar industry and fishing. In addition I am proud of its architecture and its diverse people. Most of us descend from thirty-nine ethnic groups (America, Europe, Asia and Africa) who have left us their culture.'

Tell us something about Preston that people won't know?
'I do not know much about the events, but according to what I was told, some industrial machinery that was used on the construction of the Panama Canal is preserved and is still in use and the United Fruit Sugar Company.

Another event is that a great shark named Don Pepe was stranded here. Many of the fishermen thought it was impossible to catch it and when they did, it had hooks and scars on almost all of its body, which corroborated its fierceness. My grandfather was one of those fishermen.'
